The Use of Automated External Defibrillation

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in Europe - affecting around 700,000 individuals every year.[1] Many of these victims can survive if the appropriate action is taken by bystanders. AED is now established as the only effective therapy for most cardiac arrest situations.

The scientific evidence to support early defibrillation is overwhelming; the delay from collapse to delivery of the first shock being the single most important determinant of survival. The chances of successful defibrillation decline at a rate of 7-10% for each minute of delay. The National Resuscitation Council (UK) strongly recommends a policy of early attempted defibrillation.[2].

In an attempt to reduce the time taken to deliver the first shock, more and more employers and organisations are beginning to site AEDs at locations where large numbers of people congregate i.e. sports grounds, airports, stations and passenger ferries.
